Craft Australia asks Kevin Murray, Executive Director of Craft Victoria and instigator of the South Project, "what are some of the key features of the South Project we can look forward to over the next couple of years."
KM "The residencies will certainly continue, providing further opportunities for cross-fertilisation. But as a conduit for cultural exchange, the project should be able itself to generate new conversations. One area that seems rich in potential is the application of dance to craft. To a broad audience, the greatest cultural attractions of the south include dance, particularly tango and samba. The dances of the south have a common African rhythm. An interesting challenge is to tap into that energy through the production of objects."

on Location: making stories is a broad theme about the place of jewellery and objects in our culture. The 12th Biennial Conference of the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia is on from 27 to 29 January, 2006. The conference will address points along the journey of an object from the maker's imagination to its inception and its placement in the cultural community - through the eyes and words of the various people that make its life possible. These are the practitioners who make the objects, the curators who place them on exhibition, the collectors who gather and wear them and the writers who talk about them. Workshops are presented as part of the conference.

Scandinavia has long been a fascination for Australians. From a craft and design point of view the aesthetic link between the countries has existed since the early twentieth century after the Great War. Inspired by the inclusion of craft designers in the industrial manufacturing process, Australians emulated similar programs to invigorate Australian production.
Craft Australia is recapturing this dialogue of cultural exchange. In October the General Manager will be going to Finland and Sweden to participate in the 2005 Year of Design Programs held in both countries. This is a cross sector government supported program designed to draw attention to Scandinavian design's capacity to enhance the competitiveness of their economy.
The trip will be an opportunity to cement intercultural relations and establish similar programs for the enhancement of Australian craft and design. More information about this project will be published in the December issue of 716 craft.design.
A two day conference will be held in Canberra to coincide with the opening of Transformations: the language of craft at the National Gallery of Australia. This unique focus on Australian and international contemporary craft practice is a timely opportunity to bring key figures in the sector together. As such Craft Australia, Craft ACT and the Craft Organisations Australia network have worked closely with Robert Bell, the curator of Transformations, to develop the Interpreting contemporary craft forum being held in association with the Transformation's conference.
The exhibiton, Transformations: the language of craft opens on Friday 11 November and the conference and forum will be on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November.

In May 2004 the Prime Minister announced that the Australian Government would establish Quality and Accessibility Frameworks for Publicly Funded Research as part of the Backing Australia's Ability - Building our Future through Science and Innovation.
CHASS has mixed views on the Preferred Model, and in their media release Malcolm Gillies states, "the model suffers from two major difficulties: it places undue emphasis on the 'quality' of research rather than the 'impact' it may have; and it has not found an adequate way to measure the increasingly-significant area of cross-disciplinary research."
