Interview with Les Blakebrough

Artist -Les Blakebrough, Photography - Ivo Lovric

The Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft program recognises the contribution to Australian culture made by Australia's leading senior craft practitioners. Three masters of Australian craft and design have been selected to launch the program. Les Blakebrough, ceramicist, Klaus Moje, glass artist, and Marian Hosking, jeweller, were selected from a shortlist of 25 established and highly regarded practitioners across a broad range of craft media in each state and territory.

The Living Treasures program is presented by Object in collaboration with Craft Australia, Museums and Galleries NSW, and University of Wollongong, and is supported by Object's National Exhibitions Strategy funded by the Australia Council.

As part of the collaboration Craft Australia interviews Les Blakebrough and presents a video on the travelling exhibition - Les Blakebrough: Ceramics.

Selling Yarns conference

Seeing artists making their work is a dynamic way to gain an understanding of how a piece of art work comes to be. To be able to share that experience with the artist in a workshop environment is truly inspiring. The handling and managing of awkward materials gives an immediate understanding of the complexity of the craft and an instantaneous appreciation of the final product.

Craft Australia was involved in the hugely successful Indigenous textile conference Selling Yarns: Australian Indigenous textiles and good business in the 21st century held in Darwin to coincide with the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (TNATIAA). The conference began with a day of workshops, artists' talks and showcase sales.

Engaging communities

Charles Sturt University's (CSU) Community Education Unit operational charter is to 'enrich regional communities with cultural and educational experiences'. Their goal is to improve the social and cultural fabric of local regional communities via access to artistic experiences not unlike those opportunities available in major metropolitan areas.

Linda Tillman, Program Coordinator at Charles Sturt University, highlights some of the arts education programs in regional communities.
