Far too often the commercial gallery sector in Australia is misrepresented and misunderstood. With regard to the galleries that specialise in the contemporary applied arts in Australia, their important role within the industry has not been properly recognised.

Commercial representation offers many advantages to the craft artist and designer and is a mutually beneficial relationship worth developing. For the practitioner it provides the benefit of increased sales and the provision of promotional services. It is well worth putting in the effort to identify an outlet or outlets that suit your work and, ideally, match your career trajectory; to establish a relationship with that outlet; and to work at nuturing this relationship once established.

In August 2006 after a year of establishing a stable of jewellers, writing computer programs, negotiating legal contracts, liaising with photographers and spending hours writing email, Rod Jacka and Alice Whish launched Definite Style; an online contemporary jewellery retail store. One year on this article examines some of the issues that have been encountered during this project.

We, sisters-three, lived with our parents in a suburban corner house in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. So humid was the weather that even the walls sweated, searching desperately for the cool of the tile floors. As little girls, we remember the excitement of playing 'shop' as a welcome distraction from the thickness of the heat. We turned coffee tables into shop counters, lounges into shelves and laundry baskets into shopping trolleys. Everything in the house was for sale.

Also on the radar this month for your attention is the ARC - Art, Design and Craft Biennial in Brisbane. Craft Australia's General Manager will facilitate the session titled Made by Hand - Mass Production Vs the Human Touch More.
On other news from the sector Craft Australia is on the advisory committee working with NAVA and AbaF to develop an online portal of information for artists on how to run a successful arts practice. The portal aims to be a one stop shop of online information that draws from data developed by the sector. More
Commercialisation is also the focus of the current developments with the MMM program. Developed as a strategy by the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council, this is the last year of this funding program. The recipients increased from three awardees to four and they have two years to complete the program rather than one as was the case in the previous two years of the program.
This year's recipients are Caroline Casey, Jon Goulder, Alexander Lotersztain and Nick Rennie. More
On the advocacy and lobby front, this past month has seen Craft Australia in election mode, attending speeches presented at the National Press Club by the Arts Minister, Senator George Brandis, and the Shadow Arts Minister Peter Garret.

Craft Australia notes with sadness the loss of Ron Beaver to the Australian craft world. Ron had a significant impact on the arts community in Canberra. With Betty Beaver, his wife, he established Beaver Galleries and through the gallery made an invaluable contribution to the lives of many Australian visual artists and craft practitioners.
The top 10 finalists in this year's Bombay Saphire Design Discover Award have been selected. The winner will be announced by international design luminary Ron Arad on October 29. Bombay Saphire
Congratulations to fashion designer Jaimi Kark recipient of the Craft ACT Mentorship Program. Jaimi will undertake a mentorship with Susan Taylor, Proprietor of the Department of the Exterior in Canberra.
Congratulations to John Quan winner of the 2007 Italian Centre Design Award. The award is a collaborative project between JamFactory Contemporary Craft & Design and the Italian Centre in South Australia.
