Object design is not in and of itself a design discipline. It refers to a way of running a business and people from a large variety of visual art, craft and or design backgrounds engage in it. What distinguishes an object design practice is the decision to be their own client - they research, develop and manage strategic relationships for the realisation of their designs.

Inside Out, the JMGA 13th National Conference being held in January 2008 in Adelaide, builds on the momentum of previous conferences and will explore jewellery and object making inside the Australia, Asia and Pacific region and outside the conventions of mainstream practice.

Making and Meaning: Craft in the 21st Century, curated by Object Gallery, brought together nine artists from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Each one of the artists blurs the boundaries that define the genres of craft and contemporary visual art by making work that defies easy categorisation. Selling Yarns: Australian Indigenous textiles and good business in the 21st century conference was held in Darwin in August, 2006 and investigated best practice and sustainability in the Indigenous textile industry. A further 3 conference papers and 1 article have been published for this December issue of 716 craft·design.
On the horizon for 2009 is the conference Selling Yarns: Innovation for Sustainability. It will be held in March 2009 at the National Museum of Australia. This second Selling Yarns conference builds on the success of the conference held in Darwin in 2006.

December always sneaks up. Why is it that the end of the year seems a frantic rush to complete all items on the ever growing list? In fact, the list has no end, and continues well beyond the end of the month and cruises speedily into the next year.
I say this as I watch my dog sunning herself on the back deck, enjoying the heat that comes with December and the onset of summer. A reminder that end of year is also a time to rest and reflect on the amazing year that we have seen at Craft Australia.
Craft Australia has been involved in some fantastic programs in 2007 that have pushed the boundaries of contemporary craft and celebrated the achievements of this practice.
The ReSkin Wearable Lab was the first wearable technologies research and development intensive laboratory lab held in Australia for Australian artists and designers.
Craft Australia recently launched Living Treasures Online. The site gives a complete overview of the program and highlights the Living Treasures and the Masters of Australian Craft 2005 to 2010.
The major international exhibition and symposium, Smart Works, explored the effects of shifts in the west away from large manufacturing industries and towards 'creative industries', high-cost commodities and tourist economies.
Craft Australia has received a 2007 Community Heritage Grant from the National Library of Australia to assist with the digitisation of the Craft Australia Slide Collection.

Throughout the year 716 craft·design highlighted many of the sector's successes with special focus issues that included Australian Indigenous craft, commercial galleries and retail outlets and the diverse range of programs undertaken by the sector.
Politically the year has seen the Australian Labor Party elected to office after 11 years as Opposition.
The Ausglass conference in Canberra and Inside Out the JMGA conference in Adelaide are both happening around the Australia Day long weekend.
In Canberra watch out for the Stephen Proctor retrospective at the Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG) and, developed specifically for the Ausglass conference, General Assembly - Open House 08 an exhibition by Blanche Tilden and Phoebe Porter.
Similarly, Inside Out, has a plethora of workshops, exhibitions and events for the interested to enjoy the diversity and innovation of this practice in Australia.
